Sania Mirza happy with her current form; aims for medal at the Olympic Games in 2012
The 24-year-old Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza was uncertain of her form and game during the initial months of 2010 due to couple of injuries that also affected her confidence on the WTA tour. Mirza, however, is now feeling quite satisfied after
winning a total of four medals in back-to-back multi discipline sporting competitions this season.
Having started playing tennis at the age of six, the dusky sizzling beauty recently grabbed two medals at the ongoing Asian Games in China after picking up two at the Commonwealth Games, held in New Delhi back in October.
The Mumbai born, who turned professional on the WTA tour back in 2003, sadly could not convert the singles silver medal in Doha into gold however she is still content with her overall form and fitness at the moment.
"A lot of people had written me off. They did not think I could win a medal in China or Delhi. I worked hard all through this year to be fit for these two events after the injury. No one expected medal[s] from me. All the expectations were from badminton
and shooting. I was unseeded in a decent field in China. I was a bit unlucky in the semi-finals. However, prior to that, beating Tamarine Tanasugarn was a confidence boosting win for me. She is a regular top fifty player on the WTA tour," declared Mirza while
talking to the reporters on Thursday.
Mirza, who picked up a bronze and silver medal in the singles and mixed doubles event respectively in China, is now confident that the her game will soon be back on track right from the beginning of 2011.
While commenting on her next year plans, the wife of Pakistan Cricketer Shoaib Malik, said that she is hoping to remain fit and play consistently all through the 2011 on the tour.
The Indian side grabbed a total of five medals at the Asian Games tennis event without senior players like Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes who are currently taking part at the season-finale Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. Sania had nothing
but praise for her fellow Indian players, who also had a great tournament, and captured medals for their country.
"Our women's side is normally weak however our men's team was also weak without Paes, Bhupathi and Rohan. Somdev was superb and capturing that men's doubles gold was even more superb. The youngsters took up the chance and proved that India have a bright future,”
explained Mirza.
The 1.73 meters tall Mirza further added that winning the mixed doubles final was highly satisfying, without any question. She paired up with Vishnu Vardhan to play the mixed doubles event at the Asian Games in China. Unlike Mahesh or Leander who are
the top players from the Indian side and have immense experience behind them, Vishnu is considerably young on the tour as he was contesting at such a big stage on the very first occasion in his career.
Currently ranked number 186 in the South African Airways WTA list, Mirza achieved her career high ranking of world number 27 back in 2007. The right hander who was given the Arjuna award by the Government of India for her contributions and achievements
in the game of tennis is popular for her powerful forehand ground strokes.
The Indian after a decent finish to the season is now hoping to continue her form and further work on her overall game in order to grab a medal at the Olympic Games to be held in London in 2012.
