Sania Mirza hoping for a wildcard to enter the London Olympics – Tennis News
Indian tennis ace, Sania Mirza, has dropped out of the Top-10 doubles ranking of the world and that has caused a great hype amongst the Indian media about her participation in the upcoming Olympics in London. She needed to finish
amongst the Top-10 players by the end of the Roland Garros French Open Championship but her early exit from the tournament forced her to drop crucial points that drowned her ranking to world number 12 in doubles category.
ITF (International Tennis Federation) has stated the final date of Olympics cut-off to be 11th June and Mirza was not amongst the Top-10 players by that date failing to get a direct entry into the London Olympics, starting
in August.
However, there is a possibility of the Indian tennis professional getting a wildcard into the tournament but for that the Indian Tennis Federation will have to use their remote connections and prove the worth of their professional
superstar to receive a wildcard.
Talking about the chances of getting their tennis ace a wildcard into Olympics, All India Tennis Association selector P.S Misra said, “A wildcard can only help her get an entry into the singles and doubles for Olympics. In doubles,
she can propose her doubles partner but the AITA selection committee will finally decide the combination.”
Indian tennis professional won the mixed doubles title in Paris, last week; teaming up with the likes of the Mahesh Bhupathi, who is also a doubles specialist from India. Both of them outplayed their rivals on the red clay courts
of Paris and grabbed the Grand Slam title. However, there is a huge probability that the Indian veteran, Leander Paes, will partner the likes of Mirza in Olympics. He is the only Indian player who has managed to confirm a spot in the doubles category.
Final decision about the application for the wildcard entry for Mirza will be made on Friday by the All Indian Tennis Association. It will be interesting to see if the better-half of the former captain of Pakistan Cricket Team,
Shoaib Malik, receives an entry into the Olympics. The case is strong but the final decision is still pending.
