Sania Mirza included in the Indian team for the Fed Cup tie in January – Tennis News
Good news for the sub-continent tennis fanatics, as there sizzling tennis icon, Sania Mirza, will soon be back in action to lead the Indian tennis team in the Fed Cup tie in January 2012. She will try to fight for a spot in the ‘Group I’ of the Asia/Oceania zone that was lost to them when Mirza was sidelined due to a chronic knee injury.
This is going to be an interesting battle not between Mirza and her competitors but also her knee injury that has erupted time and again in recent past. She had couple of surgeries of both knees that forced her to stay out of action for quite some time. The team that will accompany Mirza to a new year Fed Cup campaign will comprise of some new faces that has never featured in this format of the game.
The names include the likes of national champion Rutuja Bhonsle, one of the veterans, Isha Lakhani and an exciting young upcoming superstar, Prerna Bhambri. These four players will join hands to bring back the glory to their fans that is eagerly waiting to see them playing at the elite platform. If Mirza manages to win a place for her nation, she will definitely be back in the limelight rocking the headlines.
India was in the ‘Group I’ but lost their berth when they were not able to win a single battle in all their three round-robin clashes. This was not the end of their misery as they lost play-off rubber to Chinese Taipei. It was extremely disappointing for the local fans to see their country knocked-out of ‘Group I’ and degraded to ‘Group II’. They have another chance to get promoted to ‘Group I’ but it will all depend on how the team responds to their world class tennis superstar, Mirza.
Mirza has been the prolific performer when the overall record of Fed Cup is brought into consideration. India has only won three matches so far and two of them were the triumphs by Mirza in singles category. The captain of the team is announced and this time Rohit Rajpal is given the duty to lead the team and have them motivated for the task. Enrico Piperno will be coaching the whole team and designing the match plans for all the players before they crash into the courts for their battles.
The tie will take place from January 30th and end by February 4, 2012.
