Sania Mirza out, Agnieszka Radwanska advances into the third round – French Open 2011
Agnieszka Radwanska thrashed out Indian sensation Sania Mirza in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday to advance into the third round of 2011 French Open. The Polish may have expected an easy win against a much lower ranked player
but she was given quite a tough time by Mirza.
Mirza started off in an emphatic fashion as she broke the serve in the very game of the match with four straight points. However from there on it seemed as if she has lost the concentration and suffered four straight games to let
Radwanska take 4-1 lead in the set. Mirza put a brilliant show on the receiving end but struggled to contain Radwanska on her service games. She managed to claim only more game in the set as Radwanska bagged the opener 6-2.
The second set also opened on a similar note with Mirza dashing a gorgeous combination of forehand and backhand winners to break the serve. She showed astonishing determination to clinch her next service game after a long struggle
to take two consecutive points.
Clinching her next service game comfortably, Radwanska finally got on the scoreboard. She played her game with extreme control and managed to even the game score 4-4 with a break of serve. A successful conversion of her service
game extended her lead to 5-4 in the set.
All Mirza had to do was to take her service game but she failed to handle the heat and gifted four straight points to her opponent as the match ended in straight sets. The score-line may not suggest that but the match was played
on a very competitive note. Mirza controlled long rallies and looked to be the more established player in the match but being impatient and “over aggressive” sometimes allowed Radwanska to get the better of her. The Polish tennis-pro secured several points
from deep behind the baseline showing that Mirza was on the offensive.
It will not be wrong to say that Mirza threw away a number of her serve games due to lack of concentration. Radwanska was the cleverer of the two women and made the Indian pay heavily for her mistakes.
