Sania Mirza sinks in singles rankings whilst Bopanna and Bhupathi rise in doubles – Tennis News
Indian tennis icon, Sania Mirza’s misery is further continuing by the issue of new tennis rankings. She has slipped to the 130th spot in the singles ranking that will not help her cause to break into the Top-64 players
of the world before the list are finalized for the London Olympics.
She has to be amongst 64 top players by June 21 to make a direct entry into the singles category of the Olympics; otherwise the Indian Tennis Federation will ask for a wildcard for their doubles specialist. It is going to be a
monumental task for her. She has opted to not enter the qualifiers of the Indian Wells tournament on Wednesday that will further deteriorate her position.
Mirza participated at the ASB Classic tournament in Auckland this year but was overpowered in the opening qualifying round by the American participant, Coco Vandeweghe, in a taxing three-setter. She couldn’t survive the first round
of the Australian Open as well, losing to the 24-years-old Bulgarian, Tsvetana Pironkova.
She commenced the Pattaya Open in a promising fashion and owned the opening two rounds; ousting the likes of Ayumi Morita and Anne Keothavong but couldn’t handle the onslaught of the Taiwanese qualifier, Su-Wei Hsieh, who recently
won her maiden Women Association (WTA) title by winning the BMW Malaysian Open.
First qualifying round exit at the hands of the Canadian opponent, Aleksandra Wozniak, in the Dubai Duty Free Championships and the opening round loss at the BMW Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur at the hands of Grecian tennis ace,
Eleni Daniilidou, has drowned her confidence completely. She is definitely going to be very unpleased with her efforts in the singles category.
Other Indian professional, Somdev Devvarman, is out of action for quite some time now and that has forced him to drown 15 places in the rankings. He is currently at the 135th spot and will slip further if he doesn’t
return to the tennis circuit.
It seems like Indian players are trembling vigorously in singles while flying high in doubles category. The veteran doubles specialist, Leander Paes, is still the top ranked Indian tennis ace in the doubles category and stands
firm at the seventh spot in the overall world rankings.
A newly formed duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna has elevated three places each after their first title triumph in the Dubai Duty Free Championships. Bopanna is ranked eighth whilst his partner is now the 12th
best player in the world.
