Sania Mirza states winning Olympics Medal is her next target – Tennis News
Indian tennis princess, Sania Mirza, has shared that her next target is to grab a medal at the London Olympics.
Mirza partnered her compatriot, Mahesh Bhupathi, to win the French mixed doubles title. They defeated the Polish-Mexican pair of Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Santiago Gonzalez in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-1 in the final to win their
second Grand Slam title as a team.
The Indian beauty has done very well with Bhupathi at Grand Slam level. They had also won the Australian Open title in 2009, which was the first Major victory by an Indian woman in tennis. However, it will be Indian Tennis Federation’s
choice that they make her pair with Bhupathi or Leander Paes.
Giving an interview to the Indian media, Sania said, "Olympics is something we have all dreamt about as athletes and we want to win a medal there but a lot of things are not in our control.”
Though, after this Roland Garros triumph of Mirza and Bhupathi, it is hoped that the Federation will field the same combination at the Olympics.
Both of them will now head to their respective WTA and ATP tournaments on grass courts and start preparing from next week. Mirza will be playing AEGON Classic in Birmingham and Bhupathi will try his luck at the AEGON Championships
in London.
Bhupathi added, "We're off on the grass courts season tomorrow. She's going to Birmingham; I am going to Queen's club. It's going to be a long grass courts season because the Olympics is on grass as well. We're playing well. We're
looking forward to playing together and if we get that opportunity to play the Olympics together, hopefully we'll be able to fire like we did this week and contend for a medal."
Mirza has failed to qualify directly for the Olympics but there are huge chances that winning at the French Open will earn her a wild card entry. To play mixed doubles, one has to be a part of either the women’s singles or doubles
draw but she could not qualify for both of them. She had to finish in the top 10 in rankings on the cut off date for Olympics but she fell behind.
