Sania Mirza – the Indian tennis star falling from the sky
The female professional Indian tennis player, Sania Mirza has made her name prominent in the tennis community and has impressed the world with her powerful forehand strokes. She entered the international world of tennis with a big bang and an attitude which showed everyone how determined she was to win. Mirza is intelligent, smart, and talented and to make things even better she is drop dead gorgeous.
Sanis Mirza has been the best female tennis player ever to have emerged from India. The Indian community is dominated by men and it was scandalous for them to see Mirza playing in inappropriate attire like a sleeveless vest and a mini skirt. However, Mirza’s passion and love for the game helped her overlook all those who came in the way of her dream of becoming a tennis star.
Fighting her way through numerous controversies, Mirza finally entered a Grand Slam singles tournament and became the first Indian woman to be seeded in a Grand Slam. Her career breakthrough came at the US Open in 2005, where she advanced to the fourth round. Her career high world ranking has been 27 and it is a great achievement for an Indian woman who has faced a lot of drawbacks in her career, to have gone up so high.
Furthermore, this Indian star is a practicing Muslim and Muslim women are misunderstood by many around the world. They have been stereotyped by people to be women who sit at home and do not practice professional careers of any kind. When Mirza contradicted this, she was accused by many to have broken the rules of Islam. Mirza was not let down by this and argued that she had done nothing immoral and that people should not point fingers at her religion as it was something personal.
The twenty-three year old has had more than just controversies to put up with. Her career has been put in peril due to injuries especially to her wrist. The physique of this Indian may not look as fit and toned as compared to other professional players, as she seems to be carrying a bit of extra fat around her waistline, but her game was definitely up to mark in her early days of glory.
Gradually over the years, instead of getting better Mirza has been on a downfall in her career. Her ranking has gone done from an impressing position in the world top thirty to being at the miserable position of world number 142. Much more was expected from her by fans. She was knocked out in the first round of Wimbledon this year and recently she has been overthrown by the 18 year old Heather Watson of Britain in straight sets at the $25000 AEGON GB Pro-Series tournament. Suffering from such a tragic defeat has not been healthy for the Indian player and the odds are that her tennis career will not last too long.
No doubt Sania Mirza had her audiences mesmerized by her tactful game but it seems like her opponents have now learnt what her short-comings are and are using these to overthrow the Indian tennis princess.
Many have accused the loss of her form on her marriage to the Pakistani cricketer, Shoaib Malik. Mirza has informed the media that even though her career is in troubled waters, she will still try to work her way out of it and will not let her marital status come in the way of her career. Hence, she should not be completely shunned from the scene of tennis as yet.
There is still hope for the young Indian, as she has potential and if she manages to use this potential with the same fearless attitude with which she initiated her career, who knows how far she can go. On the other hand, if she does not save her career at this point, the fate of this tennis star may be as gloomy as all those Indian tennis players who have never even been given the chance to attain glory.
