Sania Mirza training hard to take off the next season – Tennis News
Indian tennis sensation, Sania Mirza, is working hard to have an impactful start to the 2012 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season. The 87th ranked tennis player has been sidelined from the professional tennis circuit
due to a surgery she underwent after an injury at the US Open in August this year.
Mirza has been training extremely hard to gain back her physical fitness and is very confident that her return to the tennis courts next year will be successful one. The 25-year-old is eyeing the Olympic Games, which will be staged
in 2012 summer and she believes that she will be at her 100 per cent to represent her side in the sports grand finale.
“I am able to play an hour and a half. My next tournament is a month away, so I have time to prepare. I have to train harder now though. Of course being an Olympic year, it will be on the back of everyone’s mind. But tennis isn’t
like other sports where you only have to concentrate on that one event. There are three Grand Slams and some 15 tournaments before I even start preparing for the Olympics. As of now my focus is the Australian Open," said Mirza.
Mirza took off the 2011 WTA season as the world number 166 and climbed up 78 places to finish as the world number 87 at the year end. Her runs in the singles category has not been that much impressive, as she won 23 out of 44 matches
she played, suffering defeats at 21 occurrences, and remained title-less throughout the season. The Indian has just one WTA singles title in her career but hopes for a lot more in the coming season.
She has been rather successful in the doubles category, winning three championship titles in the year 2011 and finishing the season at number 11 in doubles rankings. She teamed up Russia’s Elena Vesnina to bag the first doubles
title of the season at the Indian Wells by defeating the eight seeded opponents in straight sets. Mirza and Vesnina went on with their winning momentum to claim another WTA trophy at Charleston and then the duo stunned everyone to reach the final of Roland
Garros, after taking down the top seed and the fourth seeded teams. Unfortunately, Mirza and Vesnina failed to cash in the golden opportunity and fell to the duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in straight sets, 4-6, 3-6.
Mirza revealed in her press release that she might team up with the fellow Indian, Mahesh Bhupathi, for the Australian Open campaign next month.
