Sania Mirza will not feature singles matches until the Olympics – Tennis News

Indian tennis diva, Sania Mirza, has cited that she has shifted her focus on the doubles matches and will not play the singles encounters until her Olympic campaign. Rated at number 181 in the singles and at number eight in the
doubles category all over the world, Mirza is very enthusiastic for winning her first Olympic doubles medal this summer and has given the singles events for the sake of it.
25-year-old Mirza expressed her thought after receiving her third surgery in five year’s time and believes that her physical fitness does not allow her to carry on playing singles and doubles matches at the same time. The Indian
beauty queen has been suffering from persistent multiple injuries in the past few years but her love for the game had always urged her to step on the courts again.
“Tennis, and the surgeries, take a lot out of you. I realized at the start of the year that keeping my physical state in mind, it was impossible for me to pursue a singles and doubles career,” she said while talking to a local
news paper in Karachi, Pakistan.
Being a Top-Tenner in the doubles and lingering close to number 200 in the singles rankings sums up all for the Mirza fans. The Indian tennis ace has not been that much successful in the singles category but her feats in the doubles
and mixed-doubles events have been phenomenal. For entering the Olympics singles main draw, Mirza needs to be in the Top-62, which virtually looks impossible for her at the moment. It seems as if she has made a right decision of ditching the singles events,
provided her injury-prone fitness these days.
Mirza thinks that her doubles game has improved significantly after abandoning the singles combats, which require immense physical fitness and stamina. She has 13 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) doubles championship titles under
her belt while only one singles trophy is associated to her name in her entire career.
“Ever since I've given up on my singles career, my performance in doubles matches has been really good,” Mirza added, “I even reached a career-best seventh in the world. That's why I've decided to concentrate solely on doubles.”
She currently teams up with Mahesh Bhupathi in the mixed doubles category and will represent the Indian flag in the Olympics this season. It is also said by the critics that Mirza has failed to break into the Top-62 to earn a berth
in the Olympic singles and such statements of her are just out of despair.
