Santa Cruz joins hands with Jacob’s Heart in fight against cancer
Santa Cruz skateboards, an American Sports equipment and outfit company, recently launched new boards with a slight modification in one of their traditional graphics.
The intended motivation for introducing the new design on their boards is to join forces with Jacob’s Heart, an organisation involved in providing children’s cancer support services all over California, in the fight against cancer.
Santa Cruz originally developed their boards with a blue screaming hand printed on it, a graphic that was originally used for Speed Wheels, a business working under the parent company of Santa Cruz, NHS, but it got integrated into the Santa Cruz’s iconography
over the last few years.
However, the company has made a few changes to the iconic design. The hand is still there, but the colour has been changed from blue to purple in order to match the colour of Jacob’s Heart’s logo. Talking about this colour change, the NHS and Santa Cruz
Art Direction Lucas Musgrave said, “The purple came from trying to find a easily recognizable version of the hand that would be associated with Jacob's Heart. Purple being the main colour of their logo, we went with that.”
Musgrave and his family has been involved with Jacob’s Heart ever since his child underwent an eye surgery at the Stanford Hospital a few years back.
The founder of Santa Cruz skateboards, Richard Novak, learned about Jacob’s Heart and their mission through the mountain biking champion, Juli Furtado. After getting to know about the foundation and getting a little push from Musgrave, Novak decided to make
a contribution to the cause.
“I like to do things that have a direct effect and Jacob's Heart was just that. Jacob's Heart is a good cause and it's helping the right people,” Novak said. “It felt like the right thing to do.”
Jacob’s Heart is a non-profit organisation that not only helps sick children, but it also helps the families of those children cope with the financial and emotional strains of treating cancer. In this time of recession, the organisation requires donations
to carry out its mission if providing assistance to victims and their families.
About 500 Jacob’s Heart’s logo-bearing boards with the purple screaming hand have been manufactured and shipped to stores all over America. According to the company, 150 of these boards have already been sold.
Aside from the boards, Santa Cruz also plans to sell Jacob’s Heart Screaming Hand-bearing T-shirts and stickers. The proceeds from the sale of all these items will directly go to the charity organisation.
Talking about the initiative by Santa Cruz, the Executive Director of Jacob’s Heart, Susan Osorio, said, “A project of this significance helps ensure that Jacob's Heart will continues its mission of supporting children with cancer. It provides a sustainable
resource needed to maintain services, and offer the emotional, social and financial assistance for families dealing with paediatric cancer.”
The effort by Santa Cruz is commendable and hopefully more companies will get inspired and start contributing to the society.
