Santiago Giraldo defeats Blaz Kavcic in straight sets in 2nd round – Winston-Salem Open 2011
Hiking up the ATP Tour 250 tournament, Santiago Giraldo, Columbian, bagged another win beating Blaz Kavcic, Slovenian, in straights easy sets.
Playing their 2nd round match Of Winston-Salem Open 2011, the two went head-to-head for the first time at the Wake Forest University hard court, Winston Salem, USA. Giraldo, however, took the win beating the 24-year-old
in less than 63 minutes.
Kavcic, world No.81, considers being an all rounder. Formerly he played most of his last 10 matches on hard court practicing for the Winston Open. However, this was as far as he could go. The right-hander plays as an offensive
baseliner and needs to put on more efforts to his service.
Giraldo, on the other hand, stunned the gurus as he played his first hard court match after getting buy in the first round of Winston Open. The 23-year-old is ranked as world No.56 and a ranking best of world No.44.
Certainly, by the performance he gave, the Columbian has improved his play on hard court although his last 10 matches have been on clay. However, his win over the Slovenian took him to the next round of the ATP Tour 250 event.
The match started off with a handful of people there to watch. Starting off with serving first, the clay court specialist pulled off with the first game of the match rolling the scoreboard 1-0. Giraldo soon won his first breakpoint
win as he swiped away with game 2 and then game 3 to lead 3-0.
The Slovenian finally scores a game, however, the lead maintained as the scores hiked up to 5-2 after game 7 with Kavcic to serve next. Giraldo struck once again breaking the Slovenian in game 8 and taking away the set 6-2.
The first set stats favoured Giraldo, the winner, with 16 service points and 11 returners to his win.
Following on to the second set, the 23-year-old once again took out the first game serving first. However, the Slovenian struck back to level the scores and switched the serve. The two levelled up again at 2-2 and then on 3-3 before
Giraldo won his first breakpoint.
Winning game 7 and 9 with breakpoints, the Columbian mustered through the set winning 6-3 and concluding the match 6-2, 6-3. Giraldo stood up with 17 service points and 15 returners to sweep through with the match win.
With an effortless win over the Slovenian, the 23-year-old now sits in the 3rdround to play against the mighty American, Andy Roddick, for the quarter-final seat.
