Santiago Phelan announces reduced Los Pumas 40-man provisional squad for 2011 Rugby World Cup
Argentinean National Rugby Union team’s head coach, Santiago Phelan, has announced the 40-man squad to participate in the extensive fitness and training program starting in July, at Pensacola, United States. Santiago Phelan announced the Los Pumas squad
on Friday, June 17.
Earlier in May 2011, Santiago Phelan announced a 45-man provisional 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) squad as part of the Los Pumas preparation for the upcoming tournament. The 45-man squad later played two matches in June against the French Barbarians.
Santiago Phelan will be looking closely at the performance of the 40-man squad before the announcement of the final 30-man squad for the 2011 RWC in August. He will start with working with his players in a two-week long extensive athletic program customised
to enhance the fitness and stamina of his players. Santiago Phelan will fly to the U.S. state of Florida.
Among the players announced by Santiago Phelan, fly half Juan Martín Hernández will not accompany the squad. Hernández is currently following a rehabilitation program after a serious knee operation. Hernández injured his knee while playing for French Top
14 side Racing Metro during the 2010/11 Top 14 season.
Phelan has made several bold decisions and left out some impressive young players. The players left out of the squad include hookers Alberto Vernet Basulado and Matias Cortese from Toulouse and Gloucester Rugby respectively, Juan Pablo Orlandi from Racing
Metro, Horacio San Martín from Aironi and Ignacio Mieres from Exeter Chiefs.
In a surprise move, Pumas head coach has included the La Rochelle’s versatile front row forward Andrés Bordoy after his exceptional performance in the Top 14 and for Las Jagures in the IRB Six Nations cup.
