Newcastle United defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Davide-Santon-c10658 has rued the slow start of the club and lamented on a ‘bad day’ against West Ham in the 0-1 defeat last night.
The defeat leaves Newcastle at 10th spot, whereas a victory over the Hammers would have taken them up to 6th. With only five points separating the 5th and 10th placed teams on the league table, the fight for a
Champions League spot remains tighter than ever.
The Magpies have so far failed to replicate last season’s immense form which saw them finish 5th in the league. The club has managed to string a couple of decent results, but has been far from convincing.
This marks Newcastle’s second home defeat of the season, with the first coming against Manchester United in the 0-3 game last month.
The Magpies had struggled without most of their first team players when the new season started, and perhaps have been unlucky with injuries. Last night, they badly missed the suspended Fabricio Coloccini and Cheick Tiote, and were overpowered by the imposing
Hammers.
Newcastle missed the battling qualities of Tiote and Coloccini, and despite having had decent attempts at goal, were the lesser of the two sides.
West Ham dominated, and were the better team throughout. Newcastle did get better towards the end of the game, but the Kevin Nolan strike remained the difference between the two teams.
The player scored on his return to St. James’ Park since he left for West Ham, and clearly dealt a huge blow to the team’s confidence and momentum.
Santon was disappointed at the loss and has slammed the team’s slow start. Speaking to the club’s official website, he said:
“We are not angry about the game, just disappointed. In the first half, we were not good and everything went for West Ham and not for us. We tried to come back into the game in the second half but ended up with nothing.”
“We didn’t keep the ball well enough and started the game a little sloppy. We only started playing when West Ham went ahead and were winning. We should’ve played like that from the start. It was a very bad day.”
