Santon reveals he was close to joining A.S Roma before signing for Newcastle United: Serie A news
Newcastle United defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Davide-Santon-c10658, has revealed that he came extremely close to joining A.S Roma this summer before signing for the Tyneside club.
Santon joined Newcastle on a five-year contract for a price in the region of £5.3-million on the deadline day of summer transfer window. The left-back was signed as a replacement for Jose Enrique, who joined http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 in the summer.
The full-back admits that he was in advanced talks with the Giallorossi but things did not work out between Roma and Inter.
The 20-year-old revealed that Roma Sporting Director, Walter Sabatini, was extremely interested in his signature but after hearing nothing from the Italian side he opted to sign for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Pardew’s team.
While talking to the reporters, Santon said, “There was a moment when I was very close to joining http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749. I had no real meetings as such, but I knew Roma director Walter Sabatini
wanted me. The negotiations with my agent didn’t progress, so I went to Newcastle and I am happy with that choice.”
Roma instead signed Spanish under-21 left-back, Jose Angel, in the summer after failing in Santon’s pursuit.
The Italian international has no regrets over his decision and is happy in England. Santon is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in the world and had to leave http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan to get himself more first-team opportunities.
After an impressive debut season with the Nerazzurri in 2008/09, the defender failed to get hold of the first-team spot and his career was troubled by several injury concerns.
The youngster was loaned out to Cesena last season but he could not make an impact there too. Former Inter Milan manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, allowed the defender to leave the club before the ongoing season.
Santon has not yet made his debut for the Magpies and will miss several weeks’ football due to a knee injury. The young defender has made 7 international appearances for Gli Azzurri thus far.
