Santonio Holmes is the overtime hero as the New York Jets defeat the Cleveland Browns
For the second straight week, the New York Jets have had to play through overtime as they once again prevailed in the extra period, this time against the Cleveland Browns by a score of 26-20 on Sunday
14 November.
How it happened
There was no shortage of interesting matchups between the Jets and Browns on Sunday. Twin brothers Rex and Rob Ryan went head to head, Eric Mangini squared off for the first time against his former team,
Jets receiver Braylon "Stone Hands" Edwards went up against his old team, and several ex-Jets players, including Chansi Stuckey, Eric Barton, David Bowens, Abram Elam, and Jason Trusnik, suited up for the Browns.
The Jets went into half-time up 17-13 courtesy of a 25-yard pass by Mark Sanchez to a wide open Jerricho Cotchery, and Mark Sanchez's dive into the end zone on a 1-yard run, as the Jets scored two touchdowns
in the second quarter.
Without a single punt in the first half, five of the six first possessions of the second half were all punted away.
The Jets increased their lead in the fourth quarter when Nick Folk kicked a 25-yard field goal.
With time running out the Browns found themselves with one last possesion to help them get back in the game, and their rookie quarterback Colt McCoy led them 59 yards on 10 plays to tie the game up and
send it to overtime – a three-yard pass to Mohamed Massaquoi capped off the scoring drive.
The Jets had the first chance to win the game in overtime when Folk, who missed a career-high three field goals in the game, missed from 47 yards.
When Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was intercepted while throwing toward the end zone on the Jets next possession it pinned the Browns deep in their own zone. The Browns punted from deep in their own end,
but a good run back by Jim Leonhard got the Jets near field goal range with little time left on the clock. One play later, on a short pass by Sanchez to Santonio Holmes and the game would be over as Holmes found a seam, and with a burst of speed charged 37
yards all the way for a touchdown.
What it all means
The Browns saw their two-game win streak come to an end and they now fall to 3-6 on the season. The Browns have had one of the NFL's toughest schedules and things are going to get any easier as they take
on the 5-4 Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday 21 November.
The Jets improved their record to 7-2 and now sit tied with the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons with the best record in the NFL. The Jets take on the Houston Texans, losers of their last three
in a row, next Sunday.
