Santonio Holmes once again the hero for the New York Jets
One week after Santonio Holmes caught a touchdown pass in the dying moments to get the New York Jets a win over the Cleveland Browns, he was at it again catching the game winning touchdown to lift the
Jets over the Houston Texans 30-27 on Sunday 21 November.
How it happened
After Texans running back Arian Foster had put Houston into the lead 7-3 early in the second quarter, the Jets stormed right back down the field as Braylon Edwards caught a four-yard pass from Mark Sanchez
capping off a 10-play, 78-yard drive. After adding a second field goal, the Jets went into half-time with a comfortable 13-7 lead.
It was Holmes who extended the Jets' lead with the only score of the third quarter. Holmes was able to beat his man and make the catch from Sanchez and run the ball all the way to the end zone for a big
41-yard play.
After Nick Folk added another field goal to put the Jets ahead 23-7 early in the fourth, Matt Schaub and the Texans stormed back and scored 20 points to take a 27-23 lead with under a minute to go. After
Neil Rackers kicked a field goal to reduce the Jets lead, Schaub found tight end Joel Dreessen wide open for a 43-yard pass play for a touch down, and Arian Foster streched for a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Texans ahead by one.
Mark Sanchez was intercepted on the ensuing Jets drive which the Texans converted into a field goal to go ahead by four, meaning the Jets needed a touchdown.
The Jets had some hope after Sanchez connected with Braylon Edwards on 42-yard play to get to the Houston 6-yard line. On the very next play Sanchez floated a pass into the end zone for Holmes to go up
and make the game winning catch with 10 seconds to go.
What they're saying
"We're cutting it awfully close," Sanchez said to reporters about the fact that the last three Jets games have been won on virtually the last play of the game. "I don't think anybody has any finger nails
left if they're a Jets fan."
After losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars on a Hail Mary play the week before, the Texans were once again victims of late game heroics.
"We deserve better in these last three games," Texans defensive end Mario Williams said. "We were there. Everything is there and we're doing great and all of a sudden, we let the big play go. It's unheard
of. We just keep having it happen to us."
What it all means
The New York Jets improve to 8-2 on the season and get set to take on the Cincinnati Bengals, losers of seven in a row, at home on Thursday 25 November.
After getting off to one of their best starts to the season, the Texans now fall to 4-6 after losing their fourth straight. They host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday 28 November.
