Santonio Holmes staying with New York Jets – NFL News Update
New York Jets’ wide receiver, Santonio Holmes is going nowhere and will be staying with his team with the contract clause ensuring he remains on the roster.
Holmes remained on the roster on the second day of the NFL's waiver period on Tuesday. That guaranteed him $15.25 million for the next two seasons. Holmes had a five-year, $5 million contract with the Jets which he signed last offseason.
This is what Jets’ owner, Woody Johnson, general manager, Mike Tannenbaum and Head Coach, Rex Ryan had wanted all along.
Holmes stay with the Jets had become questionable after reports of a tussle between the wide receiver and Jets' quarterback, Mark Sanchez surfaced in media towards the end of the season.
Holmes had also been benched in the season’s finale game against the Miami Dolphins for verbally brawling with team mates.
Jets’ running back, LaDainian Tomlinson had come forward to reveal that the tensions had been prevalent since Week three or four of the season and termed the rift between Sanchez and Holmes to be a pretty serious one.
However, Johnson had wanted Holmes to stay in the team and termed him one of the best players they ever had in the team. Johnson had agreed that there were problems between Sanchez and Holmes but said they could co-exist and the differences between them
could be resolved.
"I have a high degree of confidence knowing Santonio. I know him pretty well and Mark and the team will get back on the right page. I really believe that." Johnson had then said.
The owner was of the view that both the players had won games for the Patriots as a result of supporting each other on the field and could do that in the future as well.
Even Ryan had wanted to keep Holmes.
“To dismiss some of the good things that Santonio has done for the two years he’s been here, he’s been a tremendous player for us. He’s won a ton of games for this franchise. And he’s been a good teammate.” Ryan said.
Ryan noted that although there were some things that needed to be set straight, it applied to all the players and not just to Holmes. Ryan said that Holmes had a lot of positive things about him and the problems could be dealt with.
Holmes joined the Jets in 2010 and since then has played for them. The 27-year-old player had started his National Football League (NFL) career with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2006.
This season he had 51 receiving for 654 yards and scored 8 touchdowns.
