Santoro/Woodbridge, Enquist/Muster win in Legends’ Doubles – French Open 2011
Santoro/Woodbridge defeat Stich/Ivanisevic 7-6(4), 6-3
French/Australian pair of Fabrice Santoro and Todd Woodbridge prevailed over Croatian/German team of Goran Ivanisevic and Michael Stich in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-3 in Legends’ Doubles event at French Open, Roland Garros on Thursday.
Santoro and Woodbridge took an hour and eight minutes to oust their opponents.
The French/Australian pair broke their opponents in the third game of the opening set and held their serve in the next game to take a 3-1 lead. However, Ivanisevic and Stich broke back in the tenth game to square off the score
at 5-5. The set went to a tie-break and Santoro and Woodbridge claimed a couple of mini-breaks to win it 7-4. The French/Australian team converted one of the two break points they received and saved five of the six break points they faced in the first set.
Carrying the winning momentum into the second set, Santoro and Woodbridge broke their opponents in the sixth game and capitalised on it to seal the set 6-3. The French/Australian team delivered two aces and 67 percent of the first
serves, claiming a whopping 86 percent of the points on them in the second set. The right-handers converted 58 percent of the service returns into points in the second set.
Santoro and Woodbridge will take on Thomas Enquist and Thomas Muster next
Enquist/Muster beat Kafelnikov/Medvedev 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-7
Swedish/Austrian pair of Thomas Enquist and Thomas Muster battled past Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia and Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine in three sets 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-7.
Enquist and Muster broke their opponents in the eight game of the first set and served out the set in the next game, winning it 6-3. The Swedish/Austrian duo delivered 77 percent of the first serves and bagged 43 percent of the
points on them in the opening set. The right and left hand combination returned superbly as they won 61 percent of the receiving points in the first set. Enquist and Muster converted all the three break points they received and saved one of the three break
points in the opening set.
The second set went to a tie-break. Kafelnikov and Medvedev grabbed a single mini-break in the tie-break, consolidating on it to win 7-5. The Russian/Ukrainian pair fired a whopping 92 percent of the first serves and won 73 percent
of the points on them in the opening set.
After losing a tight second set, Enquist and Muster fought back in the match tie-break, winning it 10-7. Both pair amazingly delivered 100 percent of the first serves in the match tie-break. However, Enquist and Muster had a better
conversion rate as they converted 67 percent of the first serves into points compared to just 50 percent by their opponents. The match lasted for 71 minutes.
