Sara Errani/Roberta Vinci beat Gisela Dulko/Paola Suarez in semis – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Sixth seeded Italian pair of the Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci registered a straight sets victory over the Argentine duo of Gisela Dulko and Paola Suarez in the semi-final clash of the Sony Ericsson Open on Friday. Errani and Vinci
took one hour and 20 minutes to wrap up the contest in three sets, 7-5, 6-3, to book a place in the title round of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier-level event.
The contest was played on the outdoor hard courts of the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Miami, Florida, with the Italian veterans stamping their authority over the wildcard duo. The vastly experienced pair of Errani and Vinci
had a bit rough ride in the opening set of the match but eventually took down their opponents to get one up early. With the opener in their bag, the Italians went berserk in the following set and drove the Argentines out of the competition in style.
A total of 11 break points were recorded in the entire matchup, with the Italian nailing seven out of 12 and the Argentines claiming four out of their 10 chances to finish on the losing side in the end. Errani and Vinci delivered
68 per cent of their first serve on target and clinched 21 out of 38 points on it en route to victory.
"We're very happy to reach the final here," Vinci said after the match. "We had a great match tonight with Gisela and Paola - they played a very good match."
"It was a tough match - we didn't start so well, but we got better game by game," Errani added. "I hope we can play well again Sunday and hopefully win."
The Italian veterans have already bagged seven WTA doubles titles playing as a team, while losing five times in the finals. Errani and Vinci haven’t dropped a single set en route to the final and will compete against the fifth
seeded Russian duo of Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova in the title match.
The fifth seeded Russians outplayed the American-Romanian combination of Vania King and Monica Niculescu in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in the semi-final draw to earn a date with the Italians in the final showdown in Miami. Kirilenko
and Petrova are 2-0 in the WTA finals and are the hot favourite for winning the Sony Ericsson Open. Errani and Vinci are facing the Russians for the first time in their doubles career and it will be very interesting to see how they overcome the superior-seeded
duo in the final.
