Sara Errani/ Roberta Vinci upset Gisela Dulko/ Flavia Pennetta in 3rd round – US Open 2011
Kicking off on Monday the 5th of September was the women’s doubles third round at the US Open 2011. The two teams contesting against each other were the Italian pair Sara Errani with Roberta Vinci and Argentine Gisela
Dulko besides Italian Flavia Pennetta. As both teams duelled on hard courts of USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, only one stood victorious.
Surprisingly it was the fifteenth seeded pair Errani/ Vinci, who secured a berth in the fourth round by flabbergasting the second seeded team of the Argentine/ Italian combo. Bouncing back from a set down the Italian couple won
the match with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory in 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Opening the first set was the Argentine and Italian combo who won the toss and by smashing an ace at 40-0 bagged an easy game because of no opposition. In the following two games both teams held their serves but in the fourth Dulko/
Pennetta were able to break first and in the fifth game they held their serve to take the lead at 4-1. Errani/ Vinci then went on to holding their serve in the sixth game, surprisingly they were able to break the Argentine/ Italian mixture and in the eighth
they were able to equalize the score. This was the turning point of the game as Dulko/ Pennetta won a game on their serve for the last time, it was the Argentine/ Italian’s turn to serve but the Italian pair pounced at the first opportunity to break their
opportunity and won the set.
During the second set Dulko/ Pennetta were first to serve and opened the score board at 1-0, both players won on their serves in alternate games but the Argentine/ Italian brass were first to break and took the lead at 4-1 by holding
her serve in the fifth game and went on to break her opponent in the sixth to increase the lead to 5-1. The Italian pair realized that the gap between the two was increasing and it seemed as if they struck good fortune because from there onwards they were
like an unstoppable force. Errani/ Vinci broke back for the first time in the seventh game and in the eighth won on their serve. By the ninth game they again broke their opponents and by the tenth finally equalized the score at 5-5.
Completely turning the tables and displaying supreme performance the Italian pair were not ready throw in the towel and in the eleventh game broke the Argentine/ Italian brass for the last and final time. Leading for the first
time in the game they held their serve and bagged the set without much opposition.
Both the teams had displayed an entertaining second set and with a set each, the third set would determine the final deciding factor as to who would take the cake. By accomplishing 11 winners, capitalizing on three break point
opportunities and with 10 more points, Errani/ Vinci surprisingly won the set in a comprehensive victory with a 6-2 and the match.
Although, the Italian pair came back in the game after a long exhausting struggle, they were ultimately the last ones standing.
