Sara Errani; a mere fluke or a deserving Top-Tenner? (Part One) – Tennis Special
With the former Grand Slam winner, Francesca Schiavone, racing closer to her retirement from the professional circuit, Italian tennis needed another top class performer to carry on the legacy of the sport. 25-year-old, Sara Errani,
rocked the 2012 WTA season with a series of stunning performances to live up to the hopes of the Italian tennis fans and has successfully earned a spot in the elite Top-10 among the women’s rankings.
Currently holding the ninth spot in the WTA Premier Rankings, Errani’s rise to prime is nothing less than a tale of dedicated hard work and passion for the game. The Italian youngster has never been in such sublime form which she
is currently enjoying and has risen as the number one Italian tennis player in the professional circuit.
She took off the 2012 WTA season in a steady manner and then rocketed to the heights of glory in the clay-court court swing, breaking into the Top-10 rankings for the first time in her career. However, she seems to have got stagnant
since her major breakthrough at the Roland Garros this season. A lot more was expected from her in the Wimbledon Championships and the Olympic Games but the 25-year-old has not come up to the anticipation of her fans.
Although she is still hanging into the elite Top-10 group for about a month now, her winning rate hasn’t been as impressive as it was expected from her. Some critics are of the view that her dream run at the Roland Garros was merely
a fluke and Errani is not of such calibre to remain a permanent Top-Tenner. Well, I would say is rather unjust so pass a comment like this for a player who hasn’t been given ample opportunity so far to prove her mettle. A couple of early round exits for her
cannot formulate a conclusion that her runner-up performance at the Roland Garros was just a one-time stroke of luck.
Errani has been in the professional circuit since 2002 but her performance this season till date has been most impressive so far. Besides her, only Germany’s Angelique Kerber is the other young prospect who have raced up the ranking
this season with consistent performances and bunches of championship titles. Kerber holds the seventh spot in the WTA Premier Rankings, two places above Errani, and she is also facing the similar sort of criticism these days. It is quite a disappointing thing
from such critics who start to whine so loudly after such talented player suffers a minor setback in a couple of tournament.
The Italian youngster was rated at number 45 in the world when she took off her 2012 campaign. She claimed four WTA championship titles, swelling her tally of trophies to a total of 10, in the running season and leapt multiple
spots to reach the Top-10 list of the players. Her success in the singles category was evenly followed by brilliant victories in the doubles encounters as well. Errani, along with her doubles partner, Roberta Vinci, won seven titles in the running season,
giving them the first spot in the race to the WTA Championships line-up.
