Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci: New number one and number two respectively in doubles – Tennis News
Great news for the Italian tennis fans after the conquest of their best doubles team, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, on the eve of Tuesday. They qualified for the semi-final place in the US Open championship and have dethroned
the long reigning world number one team of American, Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond. The new number one in doubles category is also the 10th ranked women in singles, Sara Errani.
The number two doubles players is her compatriot and partner, Roberta Vinci, who is ranked 19th in the singles category. Both players will also face each other in the quarter-final clash of the singles championship so
a lot of achievements are on the card for the two Italian professionals. They have dismantled number of players in their conquest at New York and have stayed alive in both singles as well as doubles.
Errani commented on her new ranking update, “Becoming WTA No.1 in doubles is dream come true. It's what you play for! We've won a lot of titles this year and to share such success with a friend like Roberta is amazing.”
The chairman of Women Tennis Association, Stacey Allaster, who is also the Chief Executive Officer stated, "I would like to congratulate Sara on becoming the WTA's World No.1 doubles player. Sara has had an amazing year in singles
and doubles, reaching both finals at Roland Garros and winning 11 titles. Sara, along with her partner Roberta, achieved an historic feat by becoming the first all-Italian team to win a Grand Slam doubles title. Their hard work and determination has paid off
and is earning them fans around the world."
Both players have performed emphatically well throughout the season and they are the deserving world number one and two. The last top ranked Italian player in the doubles category was Flavia Pennetta who succeeded in retaining
that spot for 18 weeks in 2011. It was a little cameo but that must have lifted the morale of the current number one player, who is having a breakthrough season in both singles and doubles having clean swept two tournaments already.
