Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci is the first doubles team to confirm spot at Istanbul – Tennis News
The Italian duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci has broke the shackles in the current season and has become the first team to enter its name in the draw of the season-ending WTA Championships at Istanbul. The 25-year-old Errani
and her 29-year-old compatriot has claimed seven doubles titles this year and they are going to be listed the number one and number two player respectively in the new doubles rankings list that will be generated on coming Monday. They have taken up the place
of the long lasting American pair of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond who won the season-end finale at Istanbul last year.
Errani came to know of this advancement and was extremely excited about it. She conducted a press conference stating, "We are so happy, so excited, to have qualified for the WTA Championships. We've played very good tennis this
year and this is the reward. I was at the WTA Championships a long time ago, back in 2001, but it is even more special for me to do this with such a good friend as Sara. The level of competition in doubles has become even tougher over the last decade, so we
are looking forward to some great matches at Istanbul this year."
Turkish Tennis Federation President, Ayda Uluc commented, “We are delighted that Victoria, Maria, Sara and Roberta have qualified for the second staging of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships – Istanbul.”
It is incredible to witness the singles performance of the two Italian players as well. Recently they contested each other in the quarter-final of the US Open Championship and the younger teammate managed to secure a win in straight
sets and booked a semi-final showdown with the American legend, Serena Williams. Virtually, she doesn’t have any chance of meeting the likes of the American fourth seed superstar but the upset can still happen to anyone at anytime.
Errani is ranked 10th in the world in singles whilst her partner is standing firm on that 19th place. It has definitely been a breakthrough year for both the players especially considering their majestic French
Open triumph in Paris that yielded them their first ever Grand Slam title. Not to forget, the 25-year-old Errani contested the singles final at French Open as well. However, she failed to stop the thunderous Russian blonde, Maria Sharapova, from running away
with the show.
In the singles category, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova have also booked their places for Istanbul showdown.
