Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci just one win away from their second Grand Slam title – Tennis News
Seeded number two in the tournament draw, the Italian duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci has carried on its winning roll of the season and has reached the title match of the US Open Doubles. The Italians registered another straight sets victory over the eighth seeded Spanish pair of Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, 6-3, 6-2, in the semi-final clash on Thursday afternoon.
Errani and Vinci have been the most successful doubles team of the current season, bagging seven WTA championship titles together. Their emphatic win at this year’s Roland Garros French Open was one of the major achievements of their doubles career and they are eyeing to repeat the similar feat at the glorious Flushing Meadows Park in New York. They have been absolutely devastating in their current Grand Slam campaign and are rated as the hot favourites for winning their second Major doubles title of the year on Saturday.
The second seeded Italians will face the world number three Czech tandem of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the title match of the US Open. The Czech combination has been the most dominant force in the tournament, winning all its encounters in straight sets to reach the final. Hlavackova and Hradecka overcame the 16th seeded Taiwanese-Spanish duo of Su-Wei Hsieh and Anabel Medina Garrigues, 7-6(2), 6-4, in the semi-final round.
Although Errani and Vinci are rated as the favourites to lift the trophy, their third seeded opponents will not let them fly away with glory that easily. Hlavackova and Hradecka have also bagged three WTA titles this season and are in fine form to give the Italian hot favourites a real tough time on Saturday. The Czech contenders have made their own plans for the crunch match and are very hopeful to register an upset against Errani and Vinci.
"I think we have a great chance," Hlavackova said. "We have confidence after playing them in Cincinnati and playing well and playing them at Wimbledon and playing great. We just have to play our game and use our strategy against them, which we know and we're not going to tell."
Errani and Vinci has an impressive 12-6 winning record in the finals of the WTA doubles events and have a 1-1 record in the Grand Slam title matches. Their Czech rivals also have a 1-1 winning ratio in the Major finals and it will be really interesting to see which duo improved their record in the upcoming big match.
