Sara Errani bags a flawless victory over Sania MIrza in the 1st round – Mercury Open 2011
Playing each other for the first time, both players dulled it out on hard courts of the La Costa Resort and Spa. The Italian, Sara Errani procured a flawless victory of 6-2, 6-3 over the Indian Sania Mirza in first round of the
Mercury Open 2011 in Carlsbad, California.
During the first set, neither of the players smashed an ace and with perfection of exactitude did not strike a single double fault.  Errani had a better serve and achieved to hit 71% of her first serve on target, while, Mirza was
only able to hit 64% of her first serve on target.  Errani had directed her shots at the far right of the court which made it impossible for Mirza to return, hence, enabling Errani to score a walloping 68% of her total return points.
While, Mirza had an average return of 48% but a pathetic serve and was only able to obtain 32% of her total serice points. Although, she was able to break her opponent twice, lack of consistency in her defence and attack, along
with, saving only one break point cost her the set.
Errani restricted her opponent to winning only two game points and won the set with 10 points more than her opponent’s.
After taking a beating in the first set, Mirza should’ve jumped back into the set, however, that did not happen and instead she had an unsatisfactory performance in all her scores of the second set. In addition, she was only able
to save four out of the seven break points along with, winning 50% of her break points. Her defence was staggering and she lost the match with 8 points fewer than Errani’s.
Mean while, Errani had restricted her opponent to only 3 game points and had 83% of her first serves on target. She saved 50% of her break points along with breaking her opponent thrice; she had a strong defence that did not falter
throughout not only the set but also the match. Due to perseverance and consistency in both her attack and defence she won the set and the match.
Overall during the set; Errani had scored an above average 57% of her total service points along with a commendable fifty eight percent in her total return points. She won the match in a straight set victory in just 68 minutes.
Born on the 29th of April, 1987 Sara Errani currently stands at world number 35. Her year to date win-loss record of singles events is 26-20 and she reached her career high ranking of 31 on the 23rd of February
2009.
The 24-year-old Errani will now face the American Vania King in the second round of the Mercury Open 2011.
