Sara Errani bags two awards after a breakthrough season – Tennis News
A terrific season in singles and doubles yielded two awards for Sara Errani; winning the title of ‘Most improved player of the year’ as well as the ‘one-half of the doubles team of the year’.
Errani confessed, “I'm very happy to have been voted most improved player, and doubles team of the year too. It has been an incredible year for me - so many matches in singles and doubles. It may be an unrepeatable year, but I'll
try to continue like this and give everything I have on the court in every match.”
The short heighted Italian registered some magnificent results in the current year that helped her to grab a spot in the Top-10 category and improve her career high ranking to world number six. The story of her success began at
the Australian Open in Melbourne where she dismissed four players to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament, one of them being the seeded player Nadia Petrova. She gunned down Valeria Savinykh in the opening round before bamboozling the Russian veteran,
Petrova. The breakthrough continued against Sorana Cirstea and Nadia Petrova and was ended by the onslaught of the Czech superstar, Petra Kvitova.
In the doubles category, Errani teamed up with her compatriot Roberta Vinci and reached the final of the Australian Open. They won the Whirlpool Monterrey Open in the following month. Later on, Errani captured Abierto Mexiacano
title by trouncing the superior seeded player, Flavia Pennetta, in the grand finale. She didn’t won the singles title there but also captured the second successive doubles title with the same partner.
Errani and Vinci played six successive tournament finals following their victory in Acapulco and won five of them including the Roland Garros French Open title. They also captured the US Open title in New York. In the singles category,
the 25-year-old Italian captured titles in Barcelona and Budapest; reached the final of the Australian Open but failed to dispatch the former world number one, Maria Sharapova. She also won the title in Palermo and contested in the semi-final of the US Open
in New York.
Let’s hope the Italian enjoys another successful year in 2013.
