Sara Errani conquers Roberta Vinci to book a spot in the final – Dubai Duty Free Championships 2013
In an all-Italian clash between the two doubles partners, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, the former held her nerves to beat the best friend in the semi-final of the Dubai Duty Free Championships on Friday. The seventh ranked Errani
registered her fifth head-to-head victory against the 17th ranked compatriot with straight sets 6-3, 6-3 showdown.
Errani commented at the end of the match, “I just tried to play my game, tried to be as solid as I could. It's tough because we know each other very well and know how each other plays, so I had to do what she didn't think I would
do. It's very difficult to play against someone who knows what you're going to do in every shot.”
The 30-year-old Italian couldn’t commence the match well; lost the opening serve game but fought back to bring the scores level at 1-1. However, the second blow for her came instantaneously as the 25-year-old Italian broke serve
to repost the lead in the third game. The lead was kept intact despite a trade-off of breakthroughs between the two contenders towards the end.
A similar start to the second witnessed a lead for the fifth seed Italian by the end of the fourth game. She broke her rival’s serve twice by that time but fell victim to the onslaught of Vinci which reduced the difference to just
two games. An exchange of breakpoints kept the scores difference intact and allowed Errani to serve for the match. She lost just one point in the process and won the encounter without much difficulty.
A friendly hug between the two athletes was witnessed after the contest was over. Some remarks were swapped in the brief meeting in which Vinci congratulated her compatriot on another convincing win. Vinci said in an on-court interview,
“I had to play aggressive, but she missed probably two or three balls, and when you play against someone who doesn't miss any balls, it's tough to play long points every single point. She played better than me today.”
Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic defeated the error-prone Caroline Wozniacki to book a date with Sara Errani for the title of the contest.
