Sara Errani defeats Angelique Kerber to qualify for the quarter-finals – US Open 2012
Seeded 10th, Sara Errani prevailed over the world number six, Angelique Kerber at the fourth round of the US Open 2012 at the Flushing Meadows Park on Monday. After a tough clash, Kerber suffered a straight sets
upset 7-6(5), 6-3 against the Italian contender.
Kerber told the reporters in a post match interview, “The balls from her were very difficult for me. it's not easy to play against an opponent like that who mixes the game up, but I knew this before the match, that she would
play a lot of spin and drop shots. I tried to be aggressive but in the important moments she was better. This year she has played very well and improved a lot. She's a very good player. She beat me and it's okay. I did everything I could today.”
The Italian contender is the four-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist and she intends to set a new record this year at the US Open. She broke Kerber’s serve in the third game to lead 2-1. However, her German opponent came back
with a cracking break of serve in the sixth game to square the scores at 3-3. A further exchange of break points evened out the score line at 4-4 and eventually a tiebreak came into play at 6-6. Eventually, Kerber collapsed under the pressure of the tie-break,
bestowing the set upon Errani to get 0-1 down.
Errani secured her dominance with her high first serve accuracy of 86, snatching 26 of 50 points. On the other hand, Kerber had an average first serve of 64 percent, securing 30 of 47 points. Both the players had a 40 percent
break point conversion precision and the Italian wrapped up the opening set with 7-6(5) win.
In the following set, the world number 10 Errani took a strong stance and snatched the initial three games to bring her lead to 3-0. Instantly, the scores once again levelled to 3-3 in the sixth game and the left-hander German
picked pace after a crucial serve break. As the match moved towards its conclusion, Kerber was unable to secure a single game, resulting in the Italian’s 6-3 win.
Errani will battle against her fellow compatriot Roberta Vinci in her upcoming quarter-final brawl. She gave the world number two, Agnieszka Radwanska, a shocking straight sets surprise, 6-1, 6-4.
