A stunning result was witnessed in the women’s final at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, with the third seed Italian, Sara Errani, outmuscling the second seed compatriot veteran, Flavia Pennetta, on Saturday night. Rated at number
36 in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) World Rankings, Errani surprised her superior-ranked opponent in gruelling three-sets, settling the final scores at 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-0, to lift the champion’s trophy for the first time this season.
The two fellow compatriots put up an enthralling contest, which was an absolute treat to watch for the local crowd. Pennetta stepped on the court with a two-match winning streak against Errani and leading 3-1 against her in the
head-to-head series. The world number 29 was deemed to be the hot favourite for twinning the Abierto Mexicano Telcel title on Saturday night but an all-round amazing performance from Errani stunned everyone watching the match.
The third seed Italian lost the opening set after a stiff contest but kept labouring extremely hard in the following set to make a comeback. She eventually won the second set tie-breaker round to force her way back in the matchup
and then it was an all-Errani show to follow. She ravaged Pennetta by striking a bagel in the final set, rocketing away to her championship victory in the most assertive manner.
Errani’s exceptional 83 per cent precise serve earned her 40 out of 74 first serve points and she further pressurised her opponent by clinching 20 return points as well. A total of 16 break points were registered in the whole matchup,
with Errani nailing nine out of her 20 opportunities and Pennetta stinging seven of her eight chances.
Action-paced opening set witnessed a total of nine break points, with the second seeded Italian taking advantage of her fifth serve break to seal the set at 7-5. Intense game play continued in the following set but Errani dragged
the game into a tie-breaker round, winning it eventually to level the set scores to 1-1.
With the match evenly poised at one-all, Errani shifted to her rage mode, belting three successive serve breaks to absolutely devastate Pennetta. The third seed Italian finished off the matchup at 6-0, winning her third championship
title in style.
