Sara Errani dumps Irina-Camelia Begu in round one – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
World number 33, Sara Errani, dumped the Romanian starlet, Irina-Camelia Begu, in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-4 to march into the second round of the Barcelona Ladies Open. It was a gruelling battle but the score line doesn’t do justice
to the 55th ranked Romanian, who played extremely well throughout the match.
It was a two hours and four-minute brawl that featured some eye-startling display from both players. They were facing each other for the first time so it was expected that they will have an outbreak at the start to take hold of
the proceedings.
Errani was the first player to break serve in the fifth game of the opening set and took a lead of 3-2 that was consolidated in the following serve game to 4-2. However, the Romanian player fought back into the contest in the eighth
game, thumping her rival down to level the scores at 4-4.
No more breakpoints were converted by any players in the following games and the tie-breaker round was enforced to decide the set. After a tight battle, it was the experience Israeli player who took the first set away but with
nothing at all to spare.
The second set also witnessed a taxing battle between the two players who registered a couple of serve holds before breaking each other’s serve to push the scores at 3-3. Both players met blow-to-blow and further enhanced the scores
at 4-4.
It was a pressure situation for the Romanian as she needed to win the set to keep her chances alive. She exerted immense pressure on her rival in the ninth serve game but wasn’t able to convert the golden opportunity to break serve.
She lost her focus and dropped two early points on her serve that forced her to drop the final game of the match.
Sara Errani is the seventh seed player in this tournament. She will take on the winner of the match between a qualifier and the Russian tennis professional, Nina Bratchikova. The top seed contestant from Italy, Francesca Schiavone,
will play her first match on Tuesday.
