Sara Errani eases past Alize Cornet to reach the quarters – Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012
Second seeded Sara Errani stomped over the French youngster, Alize Cornet, in straight sets at the Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012 on Wednesday. She clobbered a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the world number 117 to advance into the quarter-finals at this hard court tournament taking place in Monterrey, Mexico.
The Italian star dominated throughout the match to oust Cornet in their second meeting at the Sierra Madre Tennis Club. She not only took revenge for her loss at the Charleston WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event in 2008 but also levelled the head-to-head series by 1-1 against the French.
The 24-year-old went berserk in the opening set at this WTA International event. She went on a four game winning spree before Cornet could come on the score sheet. In spite of losing her serve in the sixth game, the Italian broke the French’s serve once more and assertively clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
Errani jolted down a tremendous first serve share of 82 percent as compared to the French’s 48 percent. She also clicked 11 out of 18 points on it and capitalised on three out of ten break chances to her advantage.
The world number 36 kept momentum running into the following set. She wiped out the opening three games successively before gifting away her serve in the fourth game. Errani then exchanged a serve break in the proceeding two games and after cashing in another break opportunity in the last game, she bagged the set with a 6-3 win.
The Italian again manipulated a superb first serve share and marked nine out of 19 points on it. Errani saved one out of three breakpoints she encountered but converted four out of six break chances to her advantage.
Next challenge for the higher ranked is the conqueror of the match between the wild card entrant, Yaroslava Shvedova and the Luxembourgian starlet, Mandy Minella.
The top seed, Roberta Vinci, on the other end of the draw was doomed at this event. She was edged out by the Russian rising star, Nina Bratchikova, in their first outing. The Italian capitalised on one out of nine break chances and lost her serve three times to register a 5-7, 5-7 defeat.
