Sara Errani gusts away Jana Cepelova to clear round two – Rogers Cup 2012
World number nine, Sara Errani, ousted the 117th ranked Slovak qualifier, Jana Cepelova, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to book a berth in the third round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada.
On Tuesday, the 25-year-old Italian finished off the resistance of the 19-year-old Slovak in just over 72 minutes. It must have helped her regain some composure after a couple of agonizing early exits especially the first round
battering at the hands of the former world number one, Venus Williams, in the opening clash of London Olympics.
Cepelova lost the opening serve game but fought back to equalize the scores at 1-1. Both players held their respective serve games to push the scores at 2-2.
Both players broke each other’s serve to 15:40 in the following two games that didn’t do any damage to the either party.
However, the first decisive breakthrough came in the seventh game for the Italian when she smashed a cracking winner to lead the scores 4-3.
After an intense battle, Errani managed to save a couple of breakpoints before holding on to her serve and consolidated her position by building the gap further.
Cepelova couldn’t handle pressure and gifted yet another breakthrough to the eighth seed Italian who gracefully accepted it with a mind-startling winner down the line.
First four games of the second set witnessed a see-saw battle as both players broke each other’s serve to make things interesting at every occurrence.
However, no major damage was done and the Italian athlete was the first to hold serve and push the scoreboard to 3-2 in her favour.
Moreover, Errani broke serve to love and piled up a lead of 4-2 in the second set. It looked pretty ominous for the Slovak teenager who was finding it difficult to win points on her serve.
Cepelova had her opponent on the back foot in the seventh game but squandered two marvellous opportunities to break serve that allowed a crucial serve hold to Errani.
The Italian came back strong; broke serve and sealed the victory at the hard courts of Montreal. Up next for Errani is the winner of the match between Li Na and Eugenie Bouchard.
