Sara Errani hunts down Roberta Vinci to reach the semi-finals – US Open 2012
Seeded 10th in the tournament draw, Sara Errani smashed her fellow compatriot, Roberta Vinci and qualified for the semi-finals of the US Open 2012 at the Flushing Meadows Park in New York, United States. Errani
contested in the all-Italian brawl and emerged to the surface as winner with 6-2, 6-4 triumph on Wednesday.
Talking to the media, Errani said, “A quarterfinal with your best friend is difficult. Normally when we walk out on the court we go together and we speak - today was a bit strange, especially to see her on the other side
of the net. It was not an unbelievable match, but we played a good match. I'm playing well. I feel good on the court with my shots and everything. It's the best year of my life. I'm playing very well and my ranking is very high. I just go on the court, fight
the best I can and that's it.”
Ranked 19th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Vinci commenced the opening set with a relatively sloppy start and this was the key reason for her lack of confidence in the rest of the competition. The 25-year-old,
Errani broke her opponent’s serve in the first and the seventh game. She clinched the preliminary opportunity and marked her 2-0 lead right away. Towards end of the fifth game, Vinci tried to gain momentum and brought the scores to 2-3 but Errani quickly activated
her rage mode, reeling off three games on the trot and enfolding the set with a 6-2 win.
The following set proved to be a tough encounter between the two Italians. The Vinci squared off the scores to 3-3 in the sixth game and then again in the eighth to reach 4-4. Errani attained the lead when she broke her rival’s
serve three times in the second set and dominated the score line comprehensively. Errani broke Vinci’s serve in the ninth game of the set and ruthlessly went on to conclude victory at 6-4.
Errani had an exceptional first serve accuracy of 96 percent in the set, attaining all the three serve breaks presented to her. On the other hand, the 20th seed had a low first serve of 44 percent
and this time around, she clinched two of three break points in the closing set.
The world number 10 takes a front with her 4-2 win against the 29-year-old, Vinci, after her Wednesday’s victory. Previously, Errani gave a straight sets upset to her rival in the semi-finals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel
championship in Acapulco earlier this year.
Next, Errani will have to face a tough competition against the former world number one American veteran, Serena Williams, who breezed past Ana Ivanovic, 6-1, 6-3, in the quarter-final clash.
