Sara Errani outfoxes Elena Vesnina to lift the championship title – Budapest Grand Prix 2012
Top seed Italian, Sara Errani, carried on her blistering run of form to lift the Budapest Grand Prix title after defeating the unseeded Russian, Elena Vesnina, in the final on Saturday. The title match took one hour and 43 minutes
to conclude, with the final score line settling at 7-5, 6-4, in the favour of Errani.
Rated at number 27 in the tournament draw, the Italian veteran registered her 27th victory of the running season to clinch her third championship title of the running season. Errani was facing the 78th ranked
Russian for the first time in her career and she face no difficulties at all to hunt her down in straight sets. She cruised through the contest with the utmost ease and kept belting assertive winners throughout the contest to come out as the winner.
"Elena was playing very strong today - my congratulations to her for that," Errani said after her triumph. "I had to run a lot and fight hard to keep up with her today. I was playing very well at the beginning, but Sara is the
kind of player who destroys your game and makes you feel uncomfortable on the court," Vesnina said. "I tried to play aggressively throughout the match but the slow court suited Sara's game better than it did mine, and all credit to her for winning."
The top seed Italian was absolutely phenomenal with her serve game in the contest, as she delivered 82 per cent of it on target and clinched 33 out of 53 first serve points en route to victory. She crafted a total of seven break
opportunities in the matchup and converted six of them to deprive Vesnina of her maiden WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) championship title. The unseeded Russian resisted the Fury of Errani with four out of eight break points but couldn’t bag the crucial points
in the match to finish on the losing side in the end.
A much competitive opening set was witnessed between the two contenders but Errani got the better of her opponent with three break points as compared to Vesnina’s two conversions. She went on with an aggressive intend right from
the beginning build pressure on the Russian opponent with frequent forays to the net. Errani converted number of net volleys into elegant cross-court winners and bagged the opening set at 7-5.
The following set was no different to the first one, except Errani winning more return points on the Russian’s serve. She clinched 14 out of 23 first serve points and secured 13 out of 25 returns points to inch closer to her emphatic
victory. The top seed Italian converted three out of four break points to close out the second set at 6-4 and get her hands on the gold.
