Sara Errani reaches the quarter-final after dumping Melinda Czink – Budapest Grand Prix 2012
Top seeded Italian veteran, Sara Errani, continued her winning roll at the Budapest Grand Prix on Wednesday, defeating the 118th ranked local competitor, Melinda Czink, in the second round battle. The world number 27 took one hour and 44 minutes to wrap up victory at 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, to book a spot in the quarter-finals of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour event in Budapest, Hungary.
The 25-year-old Italian was facing Czink for the first time in her career but took limited time to get the knowhow of the Hungarian’s game play. Errani stamped her authority early on the match and went on for an aggressive approach right from the beginning. She cashed in both of her break opportunities in the opening set and sailed past the Hungarian opponent to bag the set at 6-4, getting the upper hand in the contest.
Tide turned in the following set when Czink came up with an all-round onslaught to stun the top seed Italian. Errani dropped two vital break opportunities, whilst the Hungarian contender converted two out of five break points to take the better of her superior ranked opponent. She secured the second set with a breadstick to make her thumping comeback in the matchup and levelled the score line at 1-1.
Errani regrouped in the final set and thrashed the Hungarian underdog to all parts of the clay court in Budapest. She secured 11 out of 15 first serve points and broke her opponent two out of three times to conclude her impactful victory in style.
"She started to play better in the second set and I got nervous," Errani said after disposing of Czink in the second round of the tournament. "I had two games from 40-15 that I lost. In the third set, I tried to be calmer, to hit the ball deeper and push her outside the court, and that worked better."
Her 24th victory of the running season has earned her a spot in the quarter-finals of Budapest Grand prix. She will face her unseeded fellow compatriot, Alberta Brianti, who defeated Lesia Tsurenko in the second round to book a date with Errani in the round of eight.
