Sara Errani slays Estrella Cabeza-Candela to reach the quarter-final – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
World number 33, Sara Errani, trashed the 25-year-old Spaniard, Estrella Cabeza-Candela, in the second round of the Barcelona Ladies Open on Thursday. She just spared a couple of games for the 151st ranked Spanish player
and grabbed the quarter-final spot in the tournament. Final scores were 6-0, 6-2.
There was absolutely no match between the two players who hardly completed an hour of play at the Red Clay courts of Barcelona. The seventh seed Errani had defeated her rival in the previous two head-to-head matches as well and
this was just added another emphatic triumph to her name.
Candela started off poorly; saved a couple of breakpoints in the opening serve game but couldn’t repeat it for the third time and was broken up front. The Israeli starlet lost no point on her first serve game and cruised away to
a lead of 2-0.
Similar type of performance in the following four games helped the seventh seed Israeli to register two more breakpoints and a couple of serve holds to round off the first set under 30 minutes. The second set started similarly
for the Spaniard who was struggling to win a point on her serve game.
Errani won eight out nine points in the start of the second set to race past her opponent with a lead of 2-0. Another breakthrough in the meantime gave her an unassailable lead of 4-0. It was getting pretty ominous for the Spaniard
who was struggling to register a consolation game triumph in the match.
The fifth game of the second set also witnessed a breakthrough that almost closed all doors for the Spaniard to win anything in the match and avoid double bagel but somehow she was able to break serve in the sixth game and removed
that embarrassing zero games win on the scoreboard. However, it didn’t stop the thrashing from the Israeli starlet who held her serve in the eighth game to finish off the match in grand fashion.
In a post-match interview, Errani stated, “The score was pretty easy but it was a tough match. We know each other very well because we practice together in Valencia. I don't think I was playing 100% today but I managed to play
a pretty good match."
Israeli tennis ace will take on the winner of the match between the second seed German beauty queen, Julia Goerges, and the Spaniard wildcard entrant, Garbine Muguruza Blanco.
