Sara Errani squashes Carla Suarez Navarro to defend her title – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2013
World number eight, Sara Errani, proved her dominance on the clay courts once again and outplayed the Spanish finalist, Carla Suarez Navarro, in the title match of Abeirto Mexicano Telcel. She successfully defended her championship
title in straight sets, registering an assertive score line of 6-0, 6-4, on Saturday evening.
Errani has been the most successful WTA player on red dirt last season and once again had an excellent start to the 2013 clay court swing. The 25-year-old Italian didn’t drop a single set in the entire tournament and overpowered
all her opponents in straight sets en route to her title victory. Navarro has been in sublime form in this tournament but couldn’t stand against the might of the top seeded Italian. She was brutally dismantled in the opening set, suffering a cracking bagel.
The Spaniard tried to make her way back in the second set but her efforts weren’t good enough to surpass the crafty game play of Errani.
It was Errani’s first WTA title win of the 2013 season and the seventh one in total. She has already won three doubles titles so far, along with her compatriot, Roberta Vinci. The Italian was extremely delighted to enter the winners’
circle this year and hopes to bag more glorious titles in the months to come.
"In the first set the ball was much more live and the points were going much quicker, and I just played an incredible set," Errani said after the match. "Even in the second set until 2-0 for me, 15-40 on her serve, I was in control,
playing very aggressively. But the ball started getting heavier and the rallies were getting much tougher, and also she started to play much better. It got very difficult at the end. I'm so happy I closed it out at the end. Carla was playing really well. I'm
even happier because it's my first time defending a WTA title. I love this tournament - it's a really special tournament for me."
Errani came out firing in the opening set, nailing three successive break points to rocket away to 6-0 in no time. She was expected to wrap up the proceedings quickly but Navarro delayed her triumph a bit. The second seeded Spaniard
broke Errani’s serve three times in the second set but four crushing breaks of serve from the top seeded Italian left her stranded in the end.
