Sara Errani squashes Melanie Oudin to reach round three – French Open 2012
Italian tennis ace, Sara Errani, ousted the 20-year-old American, Melanie Oudin, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Oudin received the wildcard entry to play in the Roland Garros French Open and enjoyed her time at the red dirt until she
met the Italian on Wednesday.
Oudin started off poorly; lost three serve games on the trot and sunk to a trail of 0-5. However, she restored some respect by holding the Italian from registering a bagel; broke serve to get off the mark. Errani didn’t waste any
more chances and just spared a couple of game for her rival before gusting away to a set lead. It was a classic show from the in-form 21st seed Italian who has been milking titles this season.
Both these players had faced each other before in the Moorilla Hobart International in Australia during 2010 and it was a very tight three-setter where Errani sneaked a win. However, Oudin couldn’t put up a similar show this time
around and got under the influence of the 25-year-old Italian.
The second set started with a swap of serve holds before the American qualifier was powered down with a breakthrough. However, she recovered well to level the scores with a successful breakpoint conversion but gifted the lead back
in the following game.
Errani was leading the scores 4-3 when she was tested to limits but she saved a breakpoint to hold serve and consolidate the scores in her favour. She broke serve to love in the following game and registered a cracking victory
to reach the third stage.
Errani has been in terrific run of form this season and lost just two matches from her last ten encounters; the losses came against the two Top-10 players, Agnieszka Radwanska in Madrid and Samantha Stosur in Rome.
She contests her next match against the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, who looks to be in blistering form having breezed past her two rivals in the French Open. So, it will take a lot of effort from the Italian to go through
the third round; however, there is no doubt that she can register the upset.
