Sara Errani stomps over Stephanie Dubois in the opening round – Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012
Second seed, Sara Errani, blasted past the Canadian starlet, Stephanie Dubois, in straight sets at the Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012 on Monday. She jolted down a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the 25-year-old and advanced into the second round at this WTA (Women’s
Tennis Association) International level tournament taking place in Monterrey, Mexico.
Errani, ranked 36th in the WTA rankings, needed 79-minutes to tumble over the Canadian in their second meeting at this hard court event. They previously faced each other at the Wimbledon Championships 2009 but after earning this success, the Italian
extended lead in the head-to-head series by 2-0 against Dubois.
The 24-year-old flashed into opening set and after getting the desiderated break in the opening game, she jumped to a 2-0 lead. Errani then maintained her intensity in the remaining games and slickly held remaining serves. She converted another break chance
to her advantage in the seventh game and clinched the opener with a 6-2 score line.
The Bologna native remained on track to bid for her third WTA title in the second set. She earned the critical break in the first game and took the initial lead. In spite of losing her serve in the proceeding game, she broke Dubois’ serve again in the third
game and prevailed in the remaining set. The Italian held remaining serves and after getting another break of serve in the seventh game, she sealed the set by winning six games to two.
Summing up the seeds’ performance at the Sierra Madre Tennis Club, Errani defended three out of four breakpoints she came across and cashed in five out of 11 break opportunities.
Next up for the Italian is the winner of the match between the French contestant, Alize Cornet, and Tetiana Luzhanska from the United States.
Top seeded Roberta Vinci will join her compatriot in the second round. She lost her serve three times but capitalised on five out of eight break chances, subsequently manipulating a 7-5, 7-5 win in an hour and 40-minutes duel. The veteran committed fewer
unforced errors and formulated a higher first serve share. She also amazingly won 28 out of 39 points on it.
