Sara Errani stuns Kaia Kanepi; advances into the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Italian Sara Errani slew seventeenth seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi with a breadstick to breeze into the second round of Wimbledon Championships 2011, third of fourth Grand Slam events, held in London, U.K. She barely sweated in the
opening set to register a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the Estonian on Monday.
Meeting for the third time, Errani took half hour to bag the opener and one hour to prevail in the final set to eventually seal the deal in straight sets at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The Italian, ranked 34th in
the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, took revenge for her loss at Palermo last year by trashing Kanepi, ranked 17 places above her, in
The Bologna native, Errani went berserk in the opening set as she swallowed Kanepi’s entire serves. She did lost her serve once but won remaining six games to earn a breadstick. The Italian took full advantage of the 15 unforced
errors and four double faults Estonian committed and produced a much better first serve share of 76 percent as compared to Kanepi’s 50 percent. To spice the set further, Errani saved three out of four breakpoints faced and converted three out of seven breakpoint
opportunities to her advantage.
24-year-old carried her winning ways into the final set and held her opening serve plausibly to level the scores at 1-1. She found ten breakpoint chances and converted two to his advantage. However, the Italian saved three out
of four breakpoints conceded and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line. She omitted fewer unforced errors again i.e. five as opposed to Estonian’s nineteen and clobbered a much better first serve share of 81 percent as compared to Kanepi’s 50 percent.
The Italian was in great shape at the start of the season as she made a final berth at Pattaya before losing to fourth seed, Slovak Daniela Hantuchova. Later, she made semi-final berths at Marbella and Barcelona before her form
dipped as she was ousted from the second rounds from all the remaining tournaments she played before entering this major grass court event. Errani showed her class by upsetting a seeded player in her opening round match and is eying to reach far in this event.
Up next for the beaming Italian is the winner of the match between Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko and French Alize Cornet. The Ukrainian was leading one set before the match was suspended due to heavy rain.
