Sara Errani trounces Estrella Cabeza Candela to reach semis – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Italian ace, Sara Errani, stomped over the Spanish lucky loser, Estrella Cabeza Candela, in straight sets at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Thursday. She clobbered a 6-4, 6-3 success against the world number 165 to advance into the final four at the
Fairmont Acapulco Princess.
The third seed displayed awe-inspiring skills to oust the Spaniard at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) clay court tournament. The contestants previously battled each other at Torrent Challenger event six years ago and after earning this success, Errani
maintained her winning record against Candela.
Errani outshined her opponents completely in the opening set. In spite of failing to defend both breakpoints she came across, the Italian capitalised on three out of seven break chances to bag the opener with a 6-4 win.
The 24-year-old carried her rhythm into the following set and held her opening serve. She lost her serve twice but converted three out of five break chances to her advantage, ultimately clinching the set with a 6-3 score line.
Summing up Errani’s performance in this one hour and 40-minutes duel, the Italian spilled fewer errors and manipulated a better first serve share of 82 per cent as compared to Candela’s 62 per cent. She also amazingly jolted down 32 out of 58 points on it
and prevailed throughout the match.
Next up for Errani is her doubles partner, Roberta Vinci. Seeded top in this tournament, Vinci crushed the Dutch rising star, Michaella Krajicek, with a bagel to book this place.
"It will be strange to play against a friend," the third seed was quoted. "It's sad that one of us has to win and one has to lose tomorrow."
"It's just a game, we have to remember that," the highest ranked player of the tournament said of the looming match-up. "I will try to focus on my own game - use the drop shots again and try to be aggressive. Sara plays well on clay so it will be tough,
and it's not easy to play your best friend."
Vinci fended off all four breakpoints she came across and cashed in five out of nine break chances to seal the deal with a 6-2, 6-0 victory in 57-minutes. She formulated almost an equal first serve share of 52 percent but superbly marked 18 out of 25 points
on it. The Italian also smacked five aces and ended the match with 58 points as opposed to the Dutch’s 31.
