Sarah Mason and Wini Paul impress at ASP 6-Star Estoril Surf & Music Billabong Girls Pro - Round 1
After the thrilling performances of Philippa Anderson of Australia, Tanika Hoffman (ZAF), Malia Manuel of Hawaii and Nao Omura of Japan in the first four heats, the fifth and sixth heats in Round 1 of the 2011 ASP 6-Star Estoril Surf & Music Billabong Girls
Pro were captured by New Zealand surfers, Sarah Mason and Wini Paul at Praia do Guincho beach, Portugal, on June 10.
Firstly, Sarah Mason won heat 5 of Round 1 with a sterling score of 12.15 points (out of 20), while Marie Dejean of France earned second spot with a total score of 11.80 points. Her team-mate, Maud Le Car was placed third with 8.80 points.
The heat between Sarah Mason and Marie Dejean went down to the wire, but the New Zealander won it by a tiny margin of 0.35 points. She was immensely thrilled by her performance in the corresponding heat. Meanwhile, Le Car was knocked out of the competition
after securing third spot in that heat.
In heat 6, another New Zealand surfer, Wini Paul captured the first spot with a sterling score of 11.00 points, while Shelby Detmers of USA was placed second with 6.55 points and Chandler Parr of USA earned third place honours with a total score of 6.30
points. Placed fourth in heat 6 was the Portuguese surfer, Maria Abecasis with a total score of 4.90 points.
Sarah Mason will be upfront in heat 9 with Courtney Conlogue of USA, Laurina McGrath of Australia and Rosanne Hodge (ZAF) in Round 2 of the championship, while Wini Paul will face a challenging battle againt Sage Erickson of USA, Sarah Beardmore of Great
Britain and Lee Ann Curren of France in heat 11 of the corresponding round.
The current is still predicted to be difficult and testing for surfers in Round 2 of the ASP 6-Star Estoril Surf & Music Billabong Girls Pro at Praia do Guincho beach, in Portugal. With the challenging conditions, all surfers will have to put in a mammoth
effort to succeed.
