Sarah Sjoestroem dominates Women’s 50m butterfly heats: Day one – European LC Championships
Swedish freestyle expert, Sarah Sjoestroem dominated the qualification rounds of Women’s 50m butterfly on initial day of the European Long Course Championships in Debrecen, Hungary on Monday, May 21.
The 18-year-old Sjoestroem dictated terms to her challengers throughout the single lap butterfly event and entered the final round as the strongest swimmer.
With her epic pace, she stayed just a touch ahead of her closest challenger and tapped the wall with the timing of 26.48 seconds.
Her fastest qualification effort was chased by Ingvild Snildal of Norway, who was just 0.07 seconds apart and hit the finishing wall for second position by clocking a time of 26.55 seconds.
Third best qualification spot of the event was secured by Hinkelien Schreuder of Netherlands, who stayed just 0.15 seconds slower and entered the final round with the timing of 26.70 seconds.
Schreuder was trailed by Triin Aljand of Estonia and Anna Dowgiert of Poland, who proved their mettle for fourth best qualification spot of the event by clocking an identical efforts of 26.72 seconds.
Following that, the crowd witnessed furious efforts of Helge Meeuw in the Men’s 100m backstroke semi-finals. The 27-year-old Meeuw made his way to the finishing wall for fastest qualification spot by posting a time of 53.80 seconds.
He was chased by Aristeidis Grigoriadis of Greece, who stayed just 0.09 seconds apart and qualified into the playoff by producing a time of 53.89 seconds.
With his splendid performance, Grigoriadis remained 0.37 seconds ahead of Yakov Yan Toumarkin of Israel, who sprinted his way towards the finishing end for third finest position by producing a time of 54.26 seconds.
Fourth best qualification spot of the race was obtained by Richard Bohus of Hungary, who stayed 0.09 seconds slower and ended his race with the timing of 54.35 seconds.
Bohus enjoyed a lead of 0.12 seconds over Peter Bernek of Hungary, who seized fifth best qualifying position of the event with an effort of 54.47 seconds.
The spectators appreciated gruelling performances of all participants in their respective events while these qualifying swimmers will contend each other in the playoff of their respective events.
