Sarah Sjoestroem pockets Women’s 200m freestyle gold: Day three – British Gas Swimming Championships
Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden pocketed gold medal of the Women’s Guest 200m freestyle playoff on day three of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Monday, March 5.
The British Championship is an eight-day event, which on one end acts as the Great Britain’s selection trial for the 2012 London Olympics and on the other end allows the international swimmers to familiarise with the Olympic pool.
The 18-year-old Sjoestroem showed no mercy to her challengers throughout the four-lap swim and snared gold medal of the event by posting a time of 1 minute and 55.23 seconds. She was followed by South Africa’s Karin Prinsloo, who stayed almost four seconds
slower from her former finisher and posted 1 minute and 59.32 seconds for silver medal.
Germany’s Silke Lippok occupied third position of the discipline as she remained 0.24 seconds behind and ended her swim in a time of 1 minute and 59.56 seconds.
Moments later, Velimir Stjepanovic of Serbia clinched gold medal of the Men’s Guest 200m butterfly. Stjepanovic clocked a wonderful time of 1 minute and 56.47 seconds for the crown of the event.
His scintillating effort remained 0.09 seconds ahead of Austria’s Dinko Jukic, who followed him on the victory stand for silver medal by posting 1 minute and 56.56 seconds. He was trailed by Poland’s Pawel Korzeniowski, who was nearly half a second slower
from Jukic and produced a time of 1 minute and 57.16 seconds for bronze medal.
The last event of the session was Women’s Guest 200m Individual Medley (IM), where South Africa’s Kathryn Meaklim demonstrated her gruelling efforts and grabbed the title of the event. Meaklim confirmed her top finish on the podium by submitting a time of
2 minutes and 13.59 seconds.
She was chased by Hye Ra Choi of Korea, who secured second position of the event with an effort of 2 minutes and 14.46 seconds. Beatriz Gomez of Spain emerged as the third position holder of the event as she hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and
14.91 seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all scheduled events.
