Sjoestroem is the champion of the 100m butterfly at the 2009 Rome World Long Course Championships. She also won three medals at the 2010 European Long Course Championships in Budapest, including a gold medal in the 100m butterfly category, along with the
silver and bronze finishes in the medley and freestyle relay, respectively.
Popova was the fastest to take-off from the starting blocks, which placed her marginally away from her fellow swimmers. She completed her first lap in a fastest time of 26.42 seconds and was 0.04 seconds faster than Sjoestroem in the first lap. The Swedish
competitor completed her initial lap in a time of 25.46 seconds and was 1.21 seconds away from Muffat, who posted a time of 26.67 seconds in the first lap.
The champion then geared up her swim in the second lap and out-touched her fellow contenders, clocking in a magnificent time of 54.55 seconds for the gold medal. Muffat showed an incredible increase in her sprint but was unable to overcome Popova’s 54.68
seconds, by only 0.06 seconds.
The arena admired the tremendous efforts of these international swimmers, who will continue to fight for podium finishes in their respective categories until the conclusion of all the swimming events.
