Sarah Sjostrom daunts Women’s 100m freestyle gold: Day two – 2012 Swedish Grand Prix, Uppsala
The 100m butterfly World Champion, Sarah Sjostrom has sent a daunting message to her worldwide competitors as she occupied gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle on second day of the 2012 Swedish Grand Prix in Uppsala, Sweden on Sunday, February 5.
After her alluring effort in the double-lap freestyle event, the 18-year old was recognised as the teenage swimmer of high calibre. She overwhelmed all struggles of her opponents in the freestyle discipline and remained prominent for the gold spot from the
start of the race.
Sjostrom looked comparatively stronger over her challengers on the starting blocks. With her promising effort and true determination, she was the quickest swimmer to jump into the water and gained a marginal edge over her competitors.
With her tremendous efforts, she showed no mercy to her strongest challenger, Michelle Coleman and completed her first lap of the race in a time of 26.40 seconds. The Swedish teenage veteran managed a lead of 0.22 seconds over Coleman in the first lap, as
she covered equivalent distance with the timing of 26.62 seconds.
The same continued in the second lap, where Sjostrom moved towards the finishing wall for the title with her tenacious efforts. With her resounding effort, she devastated hopes of her competitors in a ruthless manner and transpired on the finishing end with
an effort of 54.17 seconds for gold medal.
The gold medallist was followed by Coleman, who underperformed by 1.09 seconds and secured her place on the podium for silver medal by submitting a time of 55.26 seconds. The 18-year-old Coleman remained nearly a half body length ahead of her subsequent
competitor, Nathalie Lindborg, who seized third fastest spot of the race.
Lindborg stayed 0.90 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and surfaced on the finishing wall by clocking a time of 56.16 seconds for bronze medal.
Sjostrom, who captured gold medal of the 100m butterfly at the 2009 Rome World Championships, clocked a third fastest time in the 2012 Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) early world rankings and aroused hopes of her fans for the upcoming 2012 London
Olympic Games.
