Sarah Sjostrom earns Women’s 100m freestyle gold: Day three – 2011 Dutch Open LC Championships
Sarah Sjostrom of Sodertorns Simsaellskap earned the title of Women’s 100m freestyle on final day of the 2011 Dutch Open Long Course Championships in Eindhoven on Sunday, December 4th.
Sjostrom demonstrated her smothering efforts in the two-lap freestyle sprint to claim old medal of the event. Her persistent efforts in the freestyle playoff placed her on the victory stand for gold medal.
She remained the most prominent swimmer for gold medal throughout the 100m event. She was the first swimmer to jump off the starting blocks. Her powerful start placed her marginally ahead of her competitors in the start of the race.
With her relentless efforts, she completed her first lap of the race in a fastest time of 26.13 seconds. She was trailed by Femke Heemskerk of E.ON-NZA, who covered the equivalent distance with a timing of 26.40 seconds.
Ranomi Kromowidjojo of EIFFELswimmersPSV remained third fastest swimmer of the event in first lap, as she completed her first half in a time of 26.60 seconds.
Subsequently, Sjostrom continued her smothering efforts in the second half, where she extended her lead over her competitors. With her unimaginable stroke and gruelling efforts, she paved her way to the top of podium for gold medal by completing her swim in a time of 53.05 seconds.
Meanwhile, the arena witnessed a stunning effort of Kromowidjojo, who accelerated her swim in the second half and overwhelmed the efforts of her strongest rival, Heemskerk for second position. With her irresistible efforts, she remained 0.55 seconds behind gold medallist and ended her swim by clocking a time of 53.60 seconds for silver medal.
She was trailed by Heemskerk, who remained 0.53 seconds slower than her former finisher and secured the podium for bronze medal by producing a wonderful effort of 54.13 seconds.
Sjostrom was overjoyed with her title claiming effort on final day of the championship and expressed her desire of continuing the same at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games. Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all scheduled events while the winners were awarded accolades for their scintillating efforts after the session.
