Sarah Sjostrom earns Women’s 100m freestyle title: Day Two – 2011 Swimming World Cup, Stockholm
Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden showed her urgency towards the finishing end and overwhelmed her challengers in Women’s 100m freestyle final on second day of the 2011 Swimming World Cup in Stockholm, on October Sunday, 16.
The two-day competition is the second stage of seven-stop series, which is scheduled by international aquatics sport governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
Sjostrom, who qualified as the finest swimmer in the final round, dictated terms to her competitors in the final round by making a considerable improvement in her timing. Sjostrom’s powerful start and unblemished stroke provided her a marginal lead over
her competitors in the first round.
The 18-year-old Sjostrom completed her first round of the race by submitting a time of 25.35 seconds as opposed to Australian swimmer, Angie Bainbridge, who covered the same distance with an effort of 25.58 seconds.
The 0.23 seconds lead of Swedish swimmer gave her a head start and she cruised her way to the finishing wall by completing her second half in a time of 27.09 seconds to post 52.44 seconds for gold medal.
With her gold winning effort, she remained just 1.25 seconds slower than the championship mark of 51.19 seconds, owned by Francesca Halsall of Great Britain from November 2009.
The gold medallist was trailed by Australian veteran, Bainbridge, who sustained her second fastest spot in the final round. She completed her second half of the race in 27.49 seconds to submit 53.07 seconds on the board for silver medal.
Bainbridge experienced a stiff competition from her following swimmer, Daniela Schreiber of Germany, who tried to secure second fastest spot on the podium, but the Australian proved her eligibility for silver medal by edging out her rival on the finishing
wall.
She remained only 0.19 seconds ahead of Schreiber, who emerged on the finishing end with a third fastest effort of 53.26 seconds.
Sjostrom was delighted with her gold winning effort in the Stockholm leg of the series while the winners were awarded medals after the completion of the session.
