Sarah Sjostrom wins Women’s 100m freestyle title - Swedish Long Course Nationals 2011
Swedish swimmer, Sarah Sjostrom, came out strongly and nabbed the Women’s 100m freestyle meet at the Swedish Long Course Nationals 2011, held in Halmstad, Sweden, on June 30.
The Swedish swimmer dominated the meet from the starting blocks, sparing no chance for any challenge for her competitors. Sjostrom completed her distance in 54.43 seconds and broke Josefin Lillhage’s previous record of 54.64 seconds, which she set in 2009.
Sarah Sjostrom has expertise in both freestyle and butterfly races. She won the gold medal in the Women’s 100m butterfly event at the 2009 World Championships in Rome. She nabbed two gold titles in the Women’s 100m butterfly races at the 2008 and 2010 European
Championships, held in Eindhoven and Budapest, respectively. The Swedish swimmer’s individual desire at the moment is to win her first Olympic title at the upcoming Olympic events in London, 2012.
Gabriella Fagundez wound up second in the 100m freestyle with a time of 55.01 seconds, while Ida Marko-Varga earned third place honours after she touched the finishing wall in a time of 55.17 seconds.
In another meet, Kristian Kron captured the Men’s 200m back-stroke title with a winning time of 2 minutes and 01.63 seconds. Mattias Carlsson wound up second with a time of 2 minutes and 01.67 seconds, whereas, Martin Nilsson rounded out the top three in
2 minutes and 06.35 seconds. Both Kron and Carlsson broke Simon Sjodin’s previous record of 2 minutes and 02.19 seconds, set back in 2009.
In the Women’s 200m back-stroke meet, Henriette Stenkvist won the title with a sterling time of 2 minutes and 13.32 seconds. With his impressive swim, Stenkvist broke Therese Svendsen’s previous record of 2 minutes and 14.39 seconds. MeeSvendsen captured
third place honours in 2 minutes and 13.77 seconds, whereas, Ida Lindborg rounded out the top three after he touched the finishing wall in 2 minutes and 16.50 seconds.
The Swedish Long Course Nationals is an opportunity for junior and senior level swimmers to train themselves hard, for the upcoming FINA World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
