Sarah Storey not selected by the British Cycling Selection Committee
Sarah Storey’s dream of representing Great Britain in both the Paralympics and the Olympic Games shattered when she found out that her name has been dropped from the Olympic squad.
The 34-year-old mentioned on her blog that she heard the news from British Cycling after arriving back to Manchester.
The cyclist is no longer part of the team for the London World Cup to be held in February, Melbourne Track World Championships scheduled for April and the London Olympic Games next year.
Sarah was born without a left hand but proved herself by winning two gold, three silver and a bronze medal in the Barcelona Paralympic Games in 1992.
She was only 14 at the time of her first Paralympic Games participation, where she won medals in swimming before finally switching to cycling in 2005.
Storey was keen to represent Britain at the home Olympics but was left heartbroken by British Cycling.
She explained, "I collected my bags in Manchester and before heading home was told my performance in Cali was not as good as they [the selectors] were looking for and so this is the end of the journey for me with the Great Britain team pursuit team".
She further added that, “I have always said that London 2012 is about riding as many events as I am good enough for and so now it is important for me to concentrate on the other events I have at the Games".
Storey explained that she always wanted to be part of Team pursuit as it is the best opportunity to improve one’s self as a cyclist.
She is the current Para-cycling World Champion and participating at the Olympics would have been the best opportunity for her. “In the eyes of the selectors I am not able to contribute to this process any longer", Sarah stated.
The cyclist explained that she is keen to see the whole world coming to her homeland and fighting for medals.
Her main goal was to defend the 2008 gold medals she earned in Beijing but she now has to live with the decision made by selectors.
